Art in Public Space
Chur: Glass Window by Leta Peer
The plain concrete cube that forms the chapel of the new Fürstenwald
cemetery in Chur is distinguished by an imposing glass window front. To this,
the artist (*1964, lives in Basel) has applied three figurative and abstract motifs
from the world religions using screen-print technique. Through massive enlargement,
screening and mutual overlapping of the individual, partly identical recurring
images, the contrary "worlds", form languages and iconographies conjoin
into a unity. The muted, warm coloration is not unlike old frescos. Depending
on the intensity of the light, the effect shifts from a strong presence to an
only vaguely perceptible, transparent veil of color. With her work, the artist
makes an interesting contribution to the discussion on the difficulties of contemporary
art in dealing with sacral spaces and church windows.
